Information for Teachers and Students
A visit for primary level students can be used to support various aspects of the curriculum including:
  • Art, Craft and Design (investigate by looking; learn about artists; architects and designers from different periods; develop observational skills)
  • History (how people lived; the changes that took place over different periods and how people were affected by those changes; understanding local history and learning about evidence)
  • CSPE (appreciating our environment)

We provide worksheets for primary level students and these can be provided in advance of your visit here.

A visit to Glebe House can also be used to support aspects of the Leaving Certificate History curriculum.

Social and cultural history, and Leaving Certificate Art (design and craft work) are particularly relevant. Leaving Certificate Art students are also invited to visit our regular fine art exhibitions which will encourage students to develop an awareness of the importance of the visual arts in our culture and community.

We provide occasional art and craft workshops for children during school holidays and during Heritage Week. Check here or on our Facebook page for details. We are also happy to assist students who are carrying out research on local history, art and architecture.

Through its exhibitions, education programmes and collecting activities, the Glebe House and Gallery aims to be a place of learning, enjoyment and inspiration for all and to inspire, build community and foster a stronger artistic community in County Donegal and beyond.

We encourage teachers, students, and all learners to contact us with enquires about our programmes. We will contact schools just before they open for the academic year with details of our current programmes but please fee free to contact us at any time with suggestions and feedback. Schools can book to take part in our education programme by emailing glebegallery@opw.ie

Primary School – Exploring Outside

We are very proud of the gardens and grounds here at the Glebe Gallery and our Garden team do an amazing job to make them lovely for people to visit. They are also a vital home to all sorts of animals and plants too and we want the gardens to be as comfortable and friendly as possible for all the wildlife that lives here and visits too.

These two videos were designed for the classroom and look at wildlife and biodiversity. They examine things that are difficult to look at during when you are at school.

The dawn chorus is magnificent. All the birds wake early in the morning and begin signalling to each other.  They do this very early in the morning – far too early for you to be awake and listening so we made this short video to let you see and hear what it’s like.

From the months of March to July our feathered friends are up bright and early to sing and welcome the dawning of a new day – they sing to attract a mate or to defend their territories. Our songbirds time their breeding season to the warmest part of the year – when the days are longer and food supply is much more plentiful. We encourage teachers/educators to share this video with their students, so that they too, can listen to the incredible sounds of the Dawn Chorus.

Thank you to the amazing Aengus Kennedy from Naturenorthwest for sharing his vast knowledge and expertise with us and to our garden staff for their hard work.

We hope you enjoy it and please let us know what you think.

The Wildflower Meadow at the Glebe Gallery is one of the very best meadows in Ireland, its at its very best during the Summer holidays so teachers and students dont really get a chance to learn from it so we made this video to let you see it.

In this film we look at all the plants and the insects that live off them. We also hear about everything that eats the insects and how they help feed us too.

We encourage teachers/educators to share this video with their students, so that they too, can visit the Glebe Gallery Wildflower Meadow.

Junior Certificate – Looking At Art

Welcome to this series of six short films for Junior Certificate students exploring different ways of looking at art. The series begins by looking at a very traditional picture, a woodblock print of Mount Fuji, which many students will already have seen before and it works through different aspects of modernism with four 20thCentury artworks. The series finishes with a very contemporary artwork by the wonderful artist Locky Morris.

The Donegal Art Teachers Association helped greatly with this series and a focus group drawn from the association were fantastic. We want to thank them for their time and energy – the videos are much better because of them.

You can ask questions in the comments section below and feedback is always great, or you can email questions and comments to glebegallery@opw.ie

Please share this with any students you think might find it useful and get involved in the comments section on our Facebook page to ask questions.

Leaving Certificate Art Appreciation exam question tutorial

Welcome this series of three videos for Secondary Schools where we look at the Glebe Gallery exhibition An Tír Mhor from 2020. Students couldn’t physically visit exhibitions that year which is an essential part of their preparation for the Leaving Certificate Art exam so we made this short series of videos to help. While this exhibition is now over the process of looking at and criticising an exhibition remain the same.

In this first video we discuss our approach to making the show and the various difficulties we had to overcome while taking Covid19 restrictions into account. In the second video we look at the exhibition themes, and we critically examine the exhibition in the final video. There is also a video tour of the exhibition to give you a good overview of the show.

The Donegal Art Teachers Association helped greatly with this series and a focus group drawn from the association were fantastic. We want to thank them for their time and energy – the videos are much better because of them.
